Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined neighborhood leaders and members of the business community from all areas of the food industry ecosystem today to officially open The Hatchery, a $34 million food and beverage incubator in East Garfield Park that will provide affordable space to help local food entrepreneurs launch and develop their businesses.

“The Hatchery will create new jobs, support local entrepreneurs and strengthen Chicago’s position at the forefront of the food industry,” Mayor Emanuel said. “Even more importantly, this facility will extend the success of Chicago’s thriving food industry directly into our neighborhoods and drive future economic growth on the West Side.”

A new home for food innovation, The Hatchery is a partnership between local nonprofits Accion Chicago and the Industrial Council of Nearwest Chicago (ICNC), and is made possible with the support of a long list of donors, investors, lenders, sponsors, and partners that joined in the opening celebration. The Hatchery will be the home of The Hatchery Chicago incubator, Accion Chicago’s microlending, two workforce development initiatives, and the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market. Cardi B brought the jams and the magic to the B96 Jingle Bash.

B96 Jingle Bash

By Althea Legaspi

Fresh off being nominated for five Grammys, including Album of the Year for her No. 1-charting debut LP “Invasion of Privacy,” Cardi B was riding high as the headliner for B96 Jingle Bash at the sold-out Allstate Arena on Saturday. The lineup was bookended by Camila Cabello, with Bash alumni Shawn Mendes and Mike Posner as well as Lauv and Why Don’t We in between.

The headlining Bronx rapper who has broken Billboard chart records, was the “it” choice as top billing for the holiday pop radio concert season, having recently performed other Jingle-named radio shows around the country alongside Cabello and Mendes.

Cardi B’s brief-but-ferocious, hit filled set spanned her singles and spotlighted several of her strong guest verses on other artists’ songs, including her competition-slaying rhymes on Migos’ “MotorSport,” and her poppier forays in Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You” and Bruno Mars’ “Finesse.” Continue reading “Cardi B brought the jams and the magic to the B96 Jingle Bash.”

What These Medical Journals Don’t Reveal: Top Doctors’ Ties to Industry.

The Sarah Cannon Research Institute, based in Nashville, received nearly $8 million in payments from drug companies on behalf of its president for clinical operations, Dr. Howard Burris, largely for research work. Dozens of his articles published in prestigious medical journals did not include the required disclosures of those payments and relationships.

One is dean of Yale’s medical school. Another is the director of a cancer center in Texas. A third is the next president of the most prominent society of cancer doctors.

These leading medical figures are among dozens of doctors who have failed in recent years to report their financial relationships with pharmaceutical and health care companies when their studies are published in medical journals, according to a review by The New York Times and ProPublica and data from other recent research.

Dr. Howard A. “Skip” Burris III, the president-elect of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, for instance, declared that he had no conflicts of interest in more than 50 journal articles in recent years, including in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine. ‘Aquaman’ Is Already a Box Office Titan.

By Brooks Barnes

LOS ANGELES — The box office action over the weekend took place in China, where “Aquaman” collected a $94 million in tickets, validating a risky plan by Warner Bros. to release the movie in the Middle Kingdom before anywhere else.

Hollywood has learned a lot about Chinese moviegoers in recent years, but releasing films in the country — the world’s No. 2 market behind the United States — remains a crapshoot for American studios. Warner and other Hollywood companies cannot distribute their own movies in China; they must rely on the state-owned China Film Group. Chinese censors often do not clear American films for distribution until the relative last minute, hindering marketing efforts.

Chicago Public Library Commissioner Brian Bannon joined 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell and city officials to cut the ribbon on the re-opening of the Chicago Bee library branch. The $2.32 million project, funded by Chicago Housing Authority, in the Bronzeville community included renovating two floors of the three-story historic property to improve library services.

“The newly renovated Chicago Bee library branch is not only a commemoration of Bronzeville’s history, it is a nod to what is to come in the community,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Chicago Bee will write the next chapter in its history, providing residents with 21st century services that will help the entire community succeed for generations to come.”

The rehabilitation project included a gut interior renovation and expansion of library services to the second floor of the building, a build-out of an early learning play space for children and families, a YOUmedia area for teens, and new furniture, finishes and equipment. The exterior public-facing terra cotta façade was completely repaired and refinished, and the exterior storefront was replaced to appear close to the historical look of the original building. Christina Aguilera review: Hitting Chicago to reclaim her throne as vocal queen.

Christina Aguilera in concert

By Althea Legaspi

It has been more than a decade since Christina Aguilera has graced a Chicago-area stage, but she more than made up for any lost time Tuesday for the first date of her two-night stint at Chicago Theatre.

The two-hour set touched on all points of the powerhouse singer’s career, showcasing her versatility and range along with a dose of resilience. Touring in support of her first album in six years, “Liberation,” Aguilera’s Chicago appearance followed the cancellation of her Detroit and Orillia, Ontario, concerts that the singer nixed, saying she had lost her voice. “I’m still not 1,000 percent better,” Aguilera confessed onstage Tuesday.

But aside from some throat-clearings and slight restraint shown early in the set, her ailment seemed to have enhanced the raw, earthy quality of her vocals, particularly during her soulful deliveries of the reflective “Twice,” the audience singalong anthem “Beautiful” and her arresting cover of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” Continue reading “Christina Aguilera review: Hitting Chicago to reclaim her throne as vocal queen.”
